Mr. Wells had not heard of the atomic bomb when he wrote this book. Nevertheless, he makes no secret of his conviction that man would soon arm himself with the means of complete self destruction. There is a prophecy in this book which recent events have brought alarmingly nearer. Mr. Wells claims to have crowned all that he has written upon the fundamental nature of life and time in this book. He senses a crisis in time, and a sudden, imminent change int he conditions of man’s existence on this glob. “The world, ” he says, “is at the end of its tether”.
