‘This Wretched Valley’ from debut author Jenny Kiefer is a captivating horror about 4 college students who venture into the Kentucky wilderness to climb a rock structure that has seemingly never been found nor scaled by climbers. What starts as an innocent research trip turns into 6 days and nights of pure nightmare fuel as each member of the party are allured and entranced by the mysterious wall hidden in a valley just off the highway, located in the same forest the locals refuse to venture into because, as they put it, “Hardly anyone who goes in, ever comes out alright… if at all.”
Before starting this one I actually did a little pre-reading, which isn’t something I normally do with my ARCs. I like to go into these with zero expectations, HOWEVER with this one, I accidentally read that it was influenced by the Dyatlov Pass Incident which I am enthralled by and like everyone else, just want to know what happened! So I read a few posts, reviews and of course, the editors note and was just so excited to dive right in. It did not disappoint. I was so entirely captivated I ALMOST called into work to finish it. It’s like ‘The Ruins’ meets ‘The Descent’ mixed with all the mystery and theory surrounding the Dyatlov Incident, set just outside Livingston, Kentucky. I’m definitely still left with questions, which normally would bother me. This one feels like one of those stories that you don’t get to know the why or how it came to be this way, it just is, and the cycle will continue. The scenes she sets are descriptive and well placed. Chapters are short and easy to consume. Jenny has that way of giving you just enough info to keep you hanging on for that next bit. Overall an exciting read and I truly hope to see more from this author!
Recommendation: It’s like ‘The Ruins’ meets ‘The Descent’ mixed with the mystery of the Dyatlov Incident, set just outside Livingston, Kentucky. Readers of suspense and horror will love this one! <!> An enormous Thank You to Jenny Kiefer, QuirkBooks, and Goodreads for allowing me the opportunity to read this title in exchange for my honest review. <!>
