My goal for 2022 was to take control of my reading schedule, which at the start of the year was basically nonexistent. I didn’t have a plan back then, I just knew it was something I wanted (and needed) to do. I am happy to say I successfully achieved that goal and am keeping it going in 2023. Of the books I read, here are my 5 favorite non-fiction books of 2022, a small synopsis about each title and why it spoke to me.

Untamed
“Untamed is the story of how one woman learned that a responsible mother is not one who slowly dies for her children, but one who shows them how to fully live.”
Synopsis taken from Goodreads.com

As with most of the titles on this list, I wish I had read this one far sooner than I did. But with this book, I spent most of my time listening in tears. Not due to sadness or heartbreak but from the overwhelming flood of emotion & knowledge that at least one other person in this world has dealt with, and is dealing with, MANY of the same issues, situations and expectations that I am currently experiencing. I expect it’s much the same for all of us. Untamed is empowering, moving, and motivating. I would recommend it anyone and everyone, whether or not you are struggling. I also highly recommend following this authors podcast, ‘We Can Do Hard Things’. Truly amazing stuff!

“Atomic Habits reveals practical strategies that will teach you exactly how to form good habits, break bad ones, and master the tiny behaviors that lead to remarkable results.

Sometimes you’re on the right track with your personal improvements, you just need a little help with processes. This book helped to improve my basic habits, create new & better ones, and taught me how to stack them with the old ones to create an ideal process for ME! It was a huge step up in my compartmentalizing skills, as well as optimizing my time and potential with each task. Highly recommend as a title to have in your arsenal to refer back to again and again.

Atomic Habits
Where the Deer and the Antelope Play
“A book about the history and philosophy of our relationship with nature in our national parks, in our farming, and in our wildlife; what we mean when we talk about conservation; the importance of outdoor recreation; and the healthy building of both local and national communities across party lines, inspired by three journeys undertaken by actor, humorist, and New York Times bestselling author Nick Offerman.”

With non-fiction titles, I retain them best when they are read to me, so I consumed this copy via audiobook. Not only is Nick’s voice a beautiful cadence, and my absolute favorite to listen too, but he also tells it how life truly is, holding nothing back. He even calls us out as consumers for the destruction and waste that went into purchasing the very book that hes reading to us. I recommend this one mostly for personal preference. It’s just a great book to listen to.

Manson makes the argument, backed both by academic research and well-timed poop jokes, that improving our lives hinges not on our ability to turn lemons into lemonade, but on learning to stomach lemons better.

With so many distractions and opinions readily available to us these days, a person needs to limit what they truly care about, where they focus their energy, and who is  receiving their precious time & efforts. This book helps you realize (and understand) that you dont have to stop caring, you just need to take control of what you care about. It’s powerful, its important af and I truly think it should be required for high school reading lists.

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck
The Goal
The story of Alex’s fight to save his plant is more than compulsive reading. It contains a serious message for all managers in industry and explains the ideas which underline the Theory of Constraints (TOC) developed by Eli Goldratt.
Synopsis taken from Goodreads.com

This book might be my all time favorite. It’s a self-help, business book but written like a novel so it’s super easy to consume, understand and enjoyable to read. The theory of constraints can be applied to EVERY aspect of life, not just your career, and has helped me out in numerous situations. I have more copies and editions of this book than I do of Harry Potter… which is quite a lot. The Goal is another book I believe should be part of required reading for young adults.
